All donations go toward Rosies - Friends On The Streetto support those most in need, those people who are abandoned, marginalised or socially isolatedwithin our communities. There is a list of goods that they have specified that they value most asdonations on the wall near the collection spot. We’d like to thank all of those families that havealready donated to the cause!

The collection of goods has created quite the buzz amongst educators and children, acting as acatalyst for discussion about why we collect for charity, and how we can help people who are lessfortunate than ourselves.

These kinds of projects are as much about helping the wider community as they are about rolemodelling acts of compassion to the children in our care. You can also role model acts of compassionthat help those less fortunate by donating clothes, donating blood or volunteering your time tocharity organisations.

Children gain an understanding of what they value very early on, and asking questions about this canbe a great way for children to unpack it for themselves. Do they have a particular passion for helpinganimals? Do they show care for the environment, the elderly or people in poverty?

We also understand that in our fast-paced lifestyles the time to participate in charity may be hard toobtain, however there are small ways that you can teach your children about charity andcompassion every day. Discussions about equitable distribution of resources can arise from simplediscussions about sharing toys, taking turns or sharing screen time. These kinds of discussions instilin them an understanding of how their use of resources may affect others.

Random acts of kindness can also be an easy way to initiate your child’s interest in philanthropy. Thiscan spark an interest in the positive feeling that a child may feel in giving something without expectation of anything in return. You could ask:

What can you do at school to be more kind?

How does it feel when you do something kind? How can you make your teacher feel more appreciated? A thank you card perhaps? How can you make your family members feel appreciated? If you were given $500 to spend on yourself, and another $500 to give to charity, how would you choose to spend each of these amounts?

By enquiring with our kids about how and why we contribute to charity, show kindness to others, and care for those who are less fortunate, we set them up to be compassionate and philanthropicadults.

To learn more about Rosies – Friends On The Street you can click here!

How To Talk To Kids About Respecting Their Environment

At Wilston Kids Care respecting and caring for our environment is at the forefront of what we do. We acknowledge the importance of teaching the children in our care to become socially responsible and show care for their environment. As a generation of children who face growing challenges in terms of their climate and their environment, this goal is perhaps more important than ever. But how do we speak to children about this? And how do we foster an understanding and appreciation of nature when

And how do we foster an understanding and appreciation of nature when children are exposed to it less and less in our increasingly urbanised lifestyles?

The key is remembering that a child's understanding of their own context is often limited compared to that of an adult, and their way of processing information also differs. Where an adult has an understanding of how they operate in the world on a global scale, a child's understanding may be limited to their immediate surroundings and interactions, particularly when they are young. They are also likely to experience the world around them through relationships and sensory experiences, rather than textual or linguistic processing. These factors pose both a challenge and an opportunity for those of us wanting to nourish their interest in their environment. So what can you do?

1. Acknowledge and Encourage Curiosity

Children are not able to immediately grasp a large and abstract concept such as "the environment" without first understanding it, and to understand it, they must experience it. This can be achieved through simple acts like exploring natural materials in craft, walking through a park or interacting with an animal. Pose simple questions which encourage them to examine their sensory experience and engage with their intrinsic curiosity about the world around them.

"Is the surface of the leaf soft or rough?"

"What shapes can you see in the clouds?"

"Where do you think the birds go at night?"

2. Help Children To Directly Care For Their Environment

Setting up a herb or vegetable garden and allocating watering responsibilities is a simple and effective way to foster responsibility in children, as is caring for a pet. These direct and prolonged connections with nature form memorable relationships and foster valuable skills that can be extended upon later in life. Caring for a plant or animal and experiencing their life cycles in a tangible way will give children further understanding of caring for other plants and animals.

3. Be A Role Model

Children look to the adults around them for direction, directly or indirectly. So it is up to us to examine how we interact with our environment.

Are we involved in caring for the environment or are we distanced from it?

Do we consume products ethically and with restraint?

Do we dispose of our waste in a responsible way?

Do we role model recycling, composting and water saving?

Do we allow kids to interact with nature or shy away from it?

Do we talk about these things with our kids?

If we are able to support children's time in nature at a young age, they are more likely to be advocates for their environment as they grow older, as well as build a range of skills which contribute to their physical and mental health in the long-term. Ultimately a love of nature gives children an understanding of their social and environmental responsibilities, and allows them to grow into adults who respect the magnificence of the world around them.

"Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an investment in our children's health (and also, by the way, in our own)."

-Richard Louv, author of Last Child In The Woods.

Community Outreach Program

As a Service we strive to build relationships and engage with our community, and that means that we take pride in helping those in need. Not only do they get the calming and relaxing experience of using their hands to work the dough and create, they also have the smells of essential oils and plants they've grown wafting around them, and the textures and colours of natural materials to work with.

In our younger children play dough represents an opportunity to practice fine motor skills and develop the muscles and tendons in their hands, which become vitally important as they progress through school and later in life. Play dough provides a wide range of opportunities for the use of tactile skills; it can be squashed, squeezed, rolled, flattened, chopped, cut, scored, raked, punctured, poked and shredded! The addition of other materials and sensory experiences only adds to the possibilities.

As play dough and the other additional materials are open-ended in nature, and do not prescribe the outcomes in which they are used, they facilitate imaginative play where the children can conceptualise how and why their play is occuring. They could be baking delicious smelling cakes or biscuits, or growing their own miniature garden, as some of the children did this week. This intrinsic and child-directed play is highly beneficial and builds independence, self-esteem, creativity and skills such as investigation and problem solving.

The act of making the play dough when children are participants adds to their repertoire of skills and builds their proficiency in a variety of areas including mathematics (measuring, fractions), science (chemical reactivity, material characteristics, scientific method) and cooking (following a recipe, ingredient consistencies, mixing, kneading).

We love to see all of these benefits in action, so we thought we'd share the recipe for you to use at home!

You need:

2 cups plain flour2 tablespoons vegetable oil1/2 cup salt2 tablespoons cream of tartarUp to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)Food colouring (optional)Aromatic natural materials (lavender, rosemary, mint, basil) (optional)A few drops of essential oils to match (optional)

Method:

1. Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl

2. Add food colouring to the boiling water then into the dry ingredients (colour optional)

3. Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough

4. Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. (This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency!)

5. All you need to know to propagate your own rosemary plants from cuttings!

Rosemary is a very low maintenance plant which makes it a great option for gifts, it can flourish in pots, it has a beautiful scent when you run your hands through it, it’s wonderful for cooking, its flowers attract beneficial insects and, perhaps best of all, it’s easy to propagate! The kids at WKC love to use rosemary in crafts, and often use it to create wonderful scented playdough.

What you’ll need:

Rosemary cutting(s)WaterGlass bottle/ container/ vase

Procedure:

Take a 20-30cm cutting from a larger plant (the younger parts of the plant tend to be best) and strip the lower leaves off of the cutting. Fill your glass container with water. Place your cuttings in your glass container making sure that the leaves of the cutting do not sit in the water (the leaves can cause excessive algae or mould if they sit in water). Only the woody part of the cutting needs to be in the water.Place in a sunny spot (eg. windowsill) where the cutting will receive plenty of light, but not too much direct sun. After a couple of weeks you should observe the cutting growing thin, translucent, white roots into the water. Once the cutting has grown roots you are able to plant it in soil at any time, however it is best to leave the cutting in water until it has developed many long roots. To plant your cutting make a small hole as deep as the stripped section of your rosemary, place the cutting in the hole (being sure to get all roots into the hole) and back fill. In no time you’ll be enjoying your very own established rosemary plant!

Rosemary enjoys lots of sun and well drained soil with very little need for fertiliser. Rosemary also enjoys infrequent watering, so don’t let the soil be too soggy!

Donated Materials

As a service we've been trying to limit the amount of resources that we purchase, particularly one-use resources, in order to be improve our sustainability practices. Before School Care– 200 children increased to 229 children

2. After School Care – 200 children increased to 260 children

3. Vacation Care – 200 children increased to 260 children

This has been a mammoth effort by many volunteers (P&C, Subcommittee and working groups), the school, WKC Centre Management and team. This has been a long journey of working together as a community to achieve this fantastic result. The dedicated Wilston Kids Care team is so very proud and excited to have played a vital role in driving the final part of this project to fruition for our much-loved children and families.

The last installment of this project was to:

Renegotiate the 2018 Site Use Agreement and work with Jude Fountain the Principal, to secure the much-needed space requirements;Work with the Department of Education and Training (Early Childhood Education Services) on reviewing the school site plans ensuring each allocated building facility met the National Law and Regulation requirements;Liaise extensively with Department of Education and Training (Early Childhood Education Services) to walk them through and demonstrate our operational capability and vison for supporting additional school aged children at WKC; andUndertake the rigorous application and review process to secure additional places and have our Service Approval Amended.

We are excited to announce this decision will now solidify our position as one of Queensland’s largest OSHC facilities in the Primary State School system.

What Happens Next

We will be transitioning 15 children at a time each week, beginning the first week in Term 2 and every week thereafter over a four-week period.

It’s important we transition and settle 15 children at a time before bringing in additional children to ensure everyone is settled and well orientated. To do this any other way would not ensure good outcomes for the children’s health, safety and wellbeing, so it’s important that we take the time to roll this out correctly and minimise disruption to our existing children and our educators. WKC has been busy orientating and training new team members at the beginning of this year in preparation to support the additional places once approved.

We will follow the below operational strategy.

Step 1 - The first 15 children from our Waitlist have been identified and the families of those children will receive a formal booking offer today (06.04.18) and offers will continue to be issued over the next four-week period 15 children at a time.

Step 2 - Once you receive this offer you will only have from today until next Friday 13th April 2018 to accept otherwise the system will automatically delete your Waitlist booking. We have adjusted the timeframe due to families being away on school holidays. From the next group onwards, you will only have 3 business days to accept as we need to work fast to secure entry of 15 children each week. Please note: If you fail to accept the offer it will automatically delete your Waitlist booking. If you wish to go on the Waitlist again you will have to reapply, and the system will allocate you in order of your new application date and will place you at the bottom of the Waitlist.

Step 3 - When you accept the formal offer, it will advise you of your official start date for your new booking in Term 2. If you have any further questions regarding your offer, please contact Dani or Michaela (3352 6753).

As you can appreciate, this is a large and formal process that needs to be undertaken. Unfortunately, we cannot use this time to field multiple enquiries of where families sit on the Waitlist. Our priority will be enrolling 15 children at a time/per week over as four-week period, then organising orientations for new families to ensure children are transitioned successfully into the Service.

Please be on standby in case you receive an offer as you only have a short amount of time to accept it. It will be up to families to keep vigilantly checking emails, so you don’t miss out.

We are so excited for what the rest of 2018 will bring Wilston Kids Care. Thank you for allowing us to support your child’s leisure, education and care requirements.

Rain Play

Recently Wilston Kids Care has been in the process of implementing Wet Weather Play into the program at the centre. We have been collaborating and consulting with other services in Brisbane regarding their implementation of Wet Weather Play. Angus Gorrie at Camp Hill OSHC has provided great advice and feedback for implementing this type of play at our service in a safe and beneficial way. Our Educational Leaders, Nicola Bergmann and Ryan Fraser, have been working hard to risk assess these activities. This risk assessment is accessible to all families in the Wilston Kids Care office. Rain play is not compulsory; this activity will only be conducted if children have a raincoat or poncho in their bags, and therefore you are able to easily opt out if you wish.

What is Rain Play?

Rain play is the act of allowing children to play freely in the rain in safe and supervised conditions.

What is needed?

In the event of wet weather, we will let children play outside if they have weather gear (minimum requirement being a rain coat) in their possession. Through our consultation process we have found that some gum boots or reef boots and a plastic bag can be a great asset. If the children do not have appropriate shoes, they will be allowed to participate with bare feet in an area carefully checked for hazards. This activity is restricted to the After School Care and Vacation Care sessions, and will be conducted in light rain, not torrential downpours, lightning or cold weather.

What are the benefits of Wet Weather Play?

Implementing Wet Weather Play has many benefits. Children of all ages enjoy and benefit from playing outdoors in all except the most extreme weather. Daily outdoor play is healthy, burns energy and is also an important part of obesity prevention and helps to establish life-long patterns of healthy physical exercise. With rain jackets over their normal clothes, children are warm and protected and able to enjoy uninhibited outdoor play. A wet weather plan allows the children to engage in a variety of play in new and exciting environments and encourages the children to be adventurous and independent.

Rain Play will allow children to explore new senses. There are new smells in the air, the ground feels different beneath their feet, there are puddles to splash in and mud to squelch in. Most of us can conjure up fond memories of playing in the rain. The feeling and the sound of the rain stimulates the senses, and calms the mind.

Children explore nature and the world around them with their senses, and rain play is an important part of understanding and appreciating their environment.

Wet Weather Play will be implemented from next week (09-04-18). If you have any questions regarding Wet Weather Play, please contact the Educational Leaders at wkc.programming@wilstonpandc.org.au

Nature, Nature, Nature!

Day one of Vacation Care is finally here! At WKC everyone is required to seek appropriate sun protection when we play out in the sun. All children must wear sunscreen and an appropriate hat when they are in the sun. Sunscreen can be accessed by all children at our sunscreen stations at the room or at B Block. All families are also reminded that a cap does not suffice in place of a broad brim hat. All hats must be broad brim to offer appropriate sun protection. These rules apply to both in-term sessions and Vacation Care sessions.

So remember to slip on clothing, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slip on some sunnies! The Management Team have been hard at work behind the scenes, working simultaneously on the implementation of several projects that we believe will support our busy families and improve the customer experience at our Outside School Hours Care Service.

So far in 2018 Wilston Kids Care have delivered the following initiatives:

QikKids Kiosks - Installation and implementation of a Digital Sign in System;QikKids Enrol - Installation and implementation of a fully Automotive Booking Management System;New Reception Area - Built a new designated Reception Area that is supported by administration staff from open until close, five days a week to assist and support parent enquires;Parent Lounge Area - Making available to families two Sign in Kiosks, computer (for parent use) to access the My Family Lounge Website (if needed) and a comfortable Parent Resource and Information Area where parents can relax and chat with staff or other families attending the service.

All the above projects were identified and strategically planned for as part of a “bigger picture” approach to prepare our service to be able to support the operational capability to deliver “exceeding” education and care to more than 200 children each session. This infrastructure upgrade supports our ability to increase to our Service Approval (licence) to appropriately govern our service and look after extra children as part of our After-School Care Program.

We are proud to communicate, we have achieved all projects and would like to announce we have finalised our Site Use Agreement with the school and have actively worked in partnership with the Principal Jude Fountain, to identify additional space that could be used to apply for an extension to our Service Approval (licence). The area of demand where we currently have children waitlisted for is After School Care Program. We currently have a licence in the afternoon for 200 children and have identified additional space within the school where we can comfortably house more children which will support working families in our school community. We believe this is a victory for our working families and we are very excited to be able to identify and apply for an additional 60 spaces in our After-School Care Program. The Management Team, has worked extremely hard to put this application together. We have met with the department multiple times, worked in partnership with the school as well as strategically building a better infrastructure to support our operational capability to safely and suitably educate and care for up to 260 children in the afternoon period. This would make us one of Queensland’s largest Outside School Hours Programs delivering education and care to more than 600 families across the week.

We will also be applying for an increase to the morning session Service Approval in case of an influx of numbers due to the additional children we can cater for in the afternoon period. Due to some space restrictions as music lessons are conducted in G Block most mornings, we can only cater for additional 29 places, taking our morning licence to 229 children. The morning session currently has no issues with waitlisted children as we are not at capacity as we average around 120-140 bookings each morning. However, we will slightly increase to plan ahead for the future numbers (if needed) as more and more families also need morning care as well.

Our Vacation Care Program will increase by 60 children just like our After-School Care Program, taking the Vacation Care licence to 260 children per day. We hope to market new initiatives with regards to our Vacation Care Program and we believe this Program will become very popular over the next few years and increase in demand not only with our school community children but to the outside wider community children as well.

We are so very excited to have worked with Jude and the school to identify these additional spaces. The application will be finalised and submitted to the department this week. Our next step will be to have a site assessment and review undertaken by the Department to observe practice and review our operational plan to ensure we can successfully increase from 200 to 260 to be able to fully support the higher number of children in our care.

We will work with the Department and provide them with all the information and paperwork they need to make a decision and issue us approval in writing. This application from the time it is received by the Department, can take up to 60 business days to be reviewed and approved. We are now working closely with the Department and have raised to them we would like to have this reviewed and approved for the beginning of Term 2 which is around this projected timeframe. It is hoped that this approval will be granted within the next 60 days. However, we need to be patient, leave it in their capable hands to review to make a decision on our application. This decision then goes higher up the Department of Education and Training chain, to be mediated and substantiated for final approval by the Regional Office Manager. Whilst we have raised a projected timeframe we would like to implement, it is up to them what date this is approved. As advocates for children, they will take the necessary timeframe to make sure they are looking at the safely, health and wellbeing of all children in our care.

The Department are looking at exceeding outcomes for young children. They are looking to see if we can fully support the number of the children we have applied for, looking wait times for sign in procedures, food and menu delivery, space and facilities are compliant with National Law and Regulations, and the Education and Care delivery is in line with the National Quality Framework outcomes for Outside School Hours Care.

We will keep you posted with an outcome to this matter as soon as we hear. Our communication strategy will be equitable and delivered to all families in a succinct and prompt manner. If approved and our new Service Approval is issued, our next step is to then send official offers out to the next 60 families on the waitlist. We ask that families are prompt with their acceptance as the system can only allow 72 Hours (3 days) for an offer to be accepted before it expires from when the offer is sent. If not accepted, the system will move to next person on the waitlist and remove your child’s name completely. As the system is now digital it takes care of this process for us and will be prompt in formalising and processing offers and acceptances to get people enrolled and booked in.

Please note; none of this is approved until we receive official approval from the Department of Education and Training. If we receive approval I will communicate this to the school community and confirm our next steps.

Hopefully we can help a lot of families with this initiative. Again, we are so very happy to deliver this outcome to our Wilson Kids Care and school community families. We would like to thank all the people along the way that supported this project during this long and arduous process to finally get to this position. Now we are here, we are very excited to get the opportunity to help as many families as we can.

Kind regards,

Raeleen Wren Tamara Wilson

Centre Director Service Manager

Wilston Kids Care Wilston Kids Care

New Family Subsidy

New Family Subsidy - (New Child Care Package) commencing 2nd July 2018It's out with the old and in with the new, because the government has announced sweeping changes to how child care funding works for families.
